I agree that the Aggie didn't cover any of the election scandals and that there were no major ASUCD scandals or threats during the Fall 2007 election. Furthermore, I agree that there was a lot of drama and unproductive intensity, from what I heard. However, the Fall 2007 election saw the highest voter turnout in a Fall election in a long, long time. The turnout was even higher than the Winter 2007 election which had a fee referendum to "Save Unitrans". I think Andrew was close to the mark in regards to winter '08's low candidate turnout, however I think the "why bother" mentality came from the long hours and hardwork both sides put in. I think potential candidates might have been a bit put off by the amount of hours needed to win...the top two victorious senators in Fall 2007 both broke vote-getting records. Isn't that what people want out of an election? - Candidates and there supporters trying to engage as many students as possible and talking to them about the issues. Of course there is going to be conflict, that's the nature of an election in any country, at any level of government. - ["JamesSchwab"]

+ * I think there is a bit of a contradiction there. But, since you asked, I believe that efforts to "feed the hungry" just function as an enabler to a chosen lifestyle that simply puts a drain on our economy.
-
- My intention here is to simply point out that Ramneek's comments exhibit a lack of rationality and foresight, which are both essential characteristics an ASUCD Senator must possess. Her assertion that LEAD helps poor people around the world pay for three meals a day is simply not grounded in reality and borders on the delusional, unless your can offer some sort of proof to substantiate this comment.
-
- This time, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. Ramneek was probably just expressing her zeal for her work as a Hunger and Homelessness intern and enthusiasm for her slate. But for someone running for a position that controls such a large amount of money to make such a comment calls into question her judgment and credibility in my opinion.
- --["Users/EricFriedman"]
-
-
- * You're asserting that poor people are a drain on the economy and by helping them you are enabling their poverty? And I guess if the major fault you can find with one of LEAD's candidates is that they are really ambitious about making the world a better place, well....you got them there.-["JamesSchwab"]
-
- * You don't read very well do you. I am referring to homeless people, not poor people. And, the fault I am pointing out is her judgment, or lack thereof. --["Users/EricFriedman"]
- * So you're asserting homeless people are a drain on the economy and by helping them you are enabling their homelessness? -["JamesSchwab"]
- * Yes. Helping and celebrating their "homelessness" provides them with less incentive to get a job and take care of themselves, since their needs are being met by charity. Is it OK to help someone get back on their feet so that they can one day get a job? Of course. But to celebrate their lifestyle (Homelessness Awareness Day) is misguided. --EF
- * Wanting to help unsheltered people points to a lack of judgment? Andrew
- * No Andrew. Claiming that LEAD feeds the world by providing them with three meals a day does. --EF
-
- * Eric, I respect your courage in making non-PC statements. But I also suggest that as a member of a couple different minorities yourself it would be good to show some empathy. According to the U.S. Conference of Mayors, 46% of cities surveyed identified domestic violence as a primary cause of homelessness. According to the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions, out of a Survey of 11,000 men - 32% of them were veterans. And the National Health Care for the Homeless Council estimates that one third of homeless people have a mental illness. On a personal note; I lived my car, partly out of choice, partly out of economic necessity because I received no financial aid my freshman year and had to choose to pay either tuition or rent. At that time in my life not only did I have a job but I was in management and in charge of human resources. Most business managers would not hire a person without a permanent address. Who knows, ironically maybe I wouldn't have even hired myself. Homelessness is not a synonym for laziness. Wealth, on the other hand, is a synonym for luck. As a person that has been elected to serve a diverse group of people, it would be good to try to see things from the other point of view. They teach you to do it in law school, so get a head start. --["Users/RobRoy"]
-
- * Rob, although it may not seem like it, I do show some empathy on occasion. I have no doubt that these stats are correct, and feel horrible that sometimes, circumstances drive people to the streets. But, my main concern is a "celebration" of the homeless lifestyle that LEAD and CalPirg supports through events like Hunger and Homelessness Day. I think it's safe to say that no one wants that be homeless. I'm sure you didn't want to be homeless when you lived in your car, but you made a decision that worked out for you. And, you obviously have higher aspirations than being homeless and you weren't an economic drain because you managed a business. But, there is a distinction between your case or cases of abused women being forced onto the streets, and cases of homeless people that just don't want to get a job, or want to help themselves and resort to crime and drugs. And, I don't think enabling people in this case is in their best interest. Also, sometimes wealth is synonymous with hard work too, not just luck. --["Users/EricFriedman"]
- * What makes you thinking they were "celebrating" homelessness? They were promoting helping people to not be homeless and educating the campus about the issue of homelessness. - ["JamesSchwab"]
- * Who said that's what was going on? Who said that charity was the only solution? CALPIRG's campaign DOES NOT focus on charity - like all of our campaigns we're interested in longterm, systemic changes like affordable housing and rehabilitation. Apparently you weren't paying attention much when Homelessness Awareness Day happened, or when the local homeless community came to the senate multiple times to present - it WAS NOT created to celebrate a lifestyle. It was merely to educate students on the problem of homelessness and provide them with different resources and organizations to partcipate in and solve the problem SYSTEMICALLY. Lies, lies, lies, Eric. Do your research before making ridiculous blanket statements. ["Users/DanXie"]
- ------
- 2007-12-06 20:45:44 nbsp "Interests:
- L.E.A.D...The student government slate that makes a difference in this world!!! Helping the poor people around world to afford to pay for 3 meals a day!!!! Lobbying for social justice!!!!"
-
- She's the Hunger & Homeless coordinator for CalPIRG and she is also running for Senate. Therefore her interests are LEAD, fighting hunger & homelessness, and lobbying for social justice. She's amazing. --["Users/AndrewBianchi"]
-
- The operative word is helping. There are some people in LEAD who work to help alleviate hunger and homelessness, but that's not to say LEAD is solving the problem singlehandedly or that this is the only issue LEAD cares about. -JZwald
-
- * The key point here is that it's a list of three interests in separate sentences. Granted they aren't grammatically correct, but they are three separate ideas. If that is too hard to understand, then perhaps someone's analytical skills need some fine tuning. The three aren't meant to be fused into "LEAD fights homelessness and works for social justice." I mean, I guess EF could be right. I guess her lack of judgment not to make the sentences into three bullet points under the "Interests" section on facebook is representative of a grave character flaw that makes her a poor senate candidate. And if someone believes that the issue in question is the only thing I (or other candidates) care about, then that's an indication of their inability to read my facebook profile or judge my previous involvements in ASUCD, fraternity life, the gay community, or the campus in general. - ["Andrew Bianchi"]
-
- * The key point Bianchi is that I used my analytical skills to put two and two together. While, you are correct in stating that the interests are listed in separate sentences, the grammatical structure leads me to believe that all three ideas are linked. The first thing she states under activities is LEAD, then, she goes on to describe this slate in multiple sentences. All three sentences accurately decribe LEAD to a tea; fighting world hunger, fighting for social justice. LEAD has sponsored "Hunger and Homelessness" events before (Rosas-Romero's bill) and is running a candidate linked to this cause. So, in my mind there is a relationship between LEAD and activities that support Homelessness. Can you honeslty say that because all three are separate sentences, they are not related? I think your analytical skills need some fine tuning. My point is simple: LEAD is a one issue slate, Ramneek is a one issue candidate. These issues are out of touch with the student body. And, although I never attacked you directly, yet you felt the need to defend yourself, I will say that you are running on a one issue slate, even though you are a multi-issue candidate. You could have easily won as an independent. --["Users/EricFriedman"]
- * Eric, yourr asserting that every LEAD candidate, ever, has only cared about and worked on the issue of homelessness? -["JamesSchwab"]
- * I think your experiencing some projection issues Eric. Last time I checked, doesn't GO "just want to have fun!"? Seems pretty simple and uniform to me. It's almost as if it's GO's only issue. Take a look at the LEAD wiki page and look at the ratio of non-homelessness centered accomplishments compared to the "Homelessness Awareness Day" bill. I could have won as an independent. I decided to run with LEAD in opposition of you and what GO has come to represent through your work, among other reasons. Just because your primary work on Senate concerned the Jewish community alone, doesn't mean all other senators discriminate in their outreach and only concentrate on their base. After I win, I plan on working with as many communities as I can get around to, and I know Ramneek has the social networking skills and the passion to listen to more than just one side. I'm going to take a page out of her book at this point and refrain from caring about the nonsense you seem to drum up. --["Andrew Bianchi"]
- * Actually ["Andrew Bianchi" Andrew], I think that sense of different communities is one very big weak point of ["LEAD"], and many other similarly thinking people. The idea that different "communities" are defined by race/ethnicity. The goal of ["ASUCD"] is to advance the one ["UC Davis"] community, not to advance all of the different races/ethnicities separately but equally, or even unequally in some cases. If anything, ["LEAD"] should redefine how it classifies people not by using race/ethnicity, but instead by things such as economic class, which are more controllable by people and which also have a bigger impact on how people are treated in today's society. Rich ["African-Americans"] do not live significantly different lives than rich ["European-Americans"]. ["LEAD"] should get people focused on everyone's similarities and unify all different races/ethnicities as one big community rather than focus on the differences. I really hope that is the direction ["LEAD"] and the rest of ["ASUCD"] is going, because I remember years ago, when ["LEAD"] had to have 1 of every possible racial group because every race need representation in ["ASUCD"], and it seemed as if they thought that people of 1 race could not properly represent the interests of a different race. - ["Paul Amnuaypayoat"]
- * This is just out of pure interest, but what do you make of the existence of the CCC, the LGBTRC, the WRRC, and the various departments focused on racial or ethnic studies? I agree that ASUCD should be about creating a common community. However, the fact that aspects of the Greek system are fractured into separate microcosms based on ethnicity is evidence to me that even in small communities like UC Davis, or the UC Davis Greek system, people want to find and define their identities in a communal way. The advancement of smaller communities within the general community deals with social issues including socio-economic hierarchies. I believe that most active ASUCD officials who have witnessed my involvement can attest to my desire to unite people regardless of slate affiliation and personal identities, and that is what I hope to achieve while on Senate if elected this Winter. It's impossible to "ignore" identities because as much as they divide us, they provide people with a sense of community enabling them to retain cultural traditions, values, and mutual support in a shallower pond. I may not agree with some of GO's platform issues, but I also don't agree with some of the things LEAD senators past, present, and future hope to accomplish. For me, slating is an election process - not a declaration of a strict set of values. I believe in the Principles of Community. Anyway, I want to hear your thoughts. Thanks Paul. --["Andrew Bianchi"]
-
- * Hmm, I only served the Jewish community?? Please refer to my page for my list of accomplishments. Please look at the ratio of things I did to just serve the Jewish community and the things I did that affects all students on campus, like the outlets in the 24 hr room, the cameras in the Tercero DC, and extending the hours of Griffin Lounge. How do these accomplishments only serve the Jewish community on campus? No, GO is not a "one issue" slate. Please refer to our fall candidates platform and also our website to see our mission, our values, and what we stand for. Alex Frick successfully outreached the Science and Engineering community, Jesse Rosales successfully outreached to the agricultural community on campus, and JD successfully outreached to the Greek community on campus. Pretty diverse, no? In contrast to the traditional constituency LEAD brings in, underrepresented communities on campus, and the occasional Greek. In opposition to me and my work? God forbid that I made an independent decision and came to a conclusion that's similar to others. You wanted a specific instance though. How about the time you walked out of a Senate session because you and your decisions were being criticized. Senator Turhal received just as much, if not more, criticism as you did that night. He acted professionally and remained for the entirety of the meeting. Being a leader on campus entails that you take responsibility. You either deflect problems and criticisms onto others or simply ignore them. There are also the many times where you have prolonged or began flame wars on the Davis wiki; you're not alone on that one though, many are guilty for flame wars. I've just found yours to more noticeable/prominent in the articles I've read that could be deemed controversial. Seriously Eric, pointing out lack of clarity of the Interests section in Ramneek's Facebook profile as something that is worthy of debate? That's just being petty and trying unsettle things. I'm quite familiar with the context of his leaving. I believe he couldn't take the criticism, Eric believes he was targeted in an unjust matter, I doubt we'll ever agree on that. In hindsight, I probably should have stayed, but I was just so discussed. After I was criticized for pouring my heart out and apologizing, I knew that the mob didn't want me to apologize. They wanted to smear my name, Cem's name, and ["GO" GO's] name. There was no point for me to stay. The mob appeared to want blood, I gave them blood, but then, it wasn't good enough. That meeting was a complete waste of time. Do you know what got accomplished during that Senate meeting? Nothing. No bills were considered. And let me remind you, that is why the Senate exists, to carry out the business of the association. The attack was baseless also. They said it offended them. All the black people I talked to after that meeting said the flyer wasn't offensive. Don't you understand what LEAD did? They took something and completely blew it out of proportion and turned it into a political attack by touching on an emotional issue that affects a large part of their constituency. Looks familiar huh? As I said before Matt, you don't have much experience here, so you can't say much. But, if you want, I'll be here till 5. --["Users/EricFriedman"]
- {ooh, you made a mistake, and then another one, and yet another, but it doesn't matter because it was all pointless anyway, because it wasn't related to the initial purpose. What does "mainstream student body" even mean?
-
- Talking to some current and former ASUCD officials, you'd think that UC Davis undergraduates only care about getting free tube socks at sporting events and having a lounge open for a few extra hours on campus. I believe that a significant portion of the student body, possibly the majority, cares about social justice issues. It isn't on the top of every student's list, but the concern is still there. Let me know if you think I'm wrong.
-
- --["Users/PaulHarms"]
-
-
-
- I usually never comment on wiki, because I do not like to get involved in this internet, gossip, rumor paradox that is called daviswiki, however, after Ms. Xie posted that note about Friedman's comments about the GO-UNIT. I have to say that I am very disappointed. Friedman said that all the Black people he spoke to was not offended, however, he did speak with me and I am pretty sure I am Black and I was offended. Also, he claims that it was LEADs propaganda that blew the image of proportion, however, many of the concerned students who brought the issue forward was not part of LEAD. In addition, somebody who is elected to represent the student body, should never walk out on the student body when problems arise. That shows lack of professionalism, rudeness, insincerity and is blatantly disrespectful. As a public official you are held accountable for your actions, and running from them are not going to make them go away. Now I regret even sending that e-mail out to the African-American listserv, because clearly not all of GO feels a apology is warranted. I sent the e-mail out on the basis that Turhal told me that he wants to publicly apologize for any misconceptions about the image and if anybody was offended by it, therefore, I decided to offer my assistance so the apology can reach a portion of the population that was offended. And at the end of the apology was a list of names and Friedmans name was one of them, now if Friedman beleived that the image was not offensive, he would have never attached his name to the apology letter, therefore, Friedman is being very hypocritical and dishonest. So my question is for Friedman, is the image offensive or not, and if it is not offensive than why attach your name to apology letter that says and I quote "As the executive board of the GO slate, we would like to deeply apologize to all individuals offended by the GO Unit image that was posted on facebook during the 2007 fall election campaign." Clearly this letter acknowledges that people were offended. Like I said before I usually do not comment on wiki, but this is one time that I felt I had a obligation to speak
- upon.
- -Albert Parnell
- ------
- 2007-12-08 16:33:42 nbsp Albert,
-
- I don't think I'm being hypocritical. I'm sorry you feel that way. The letter we sent out was directed at the students who came to the senate meeting and anyone else offended. We wanted our letter sent out over the aau listserv to respond to other letters sent out over that listserv regarding the G Unit image. And, I'm sorry to say but what I said in my comments earlier was absolutely the truth. Many people in the black community I spoke with, as well as people on other listservs that receive the initial message about the G Unit flyer, really did not think it was offensive and kind of thought it was a joke. But, obviously I didn't speak with everyone in the black community, and I'm sure some people did find it offensive. That's why we sent out the letter, to apologize to those who we offended. In the letter, we repeatedly say "The GO slate apologizes to all individuals offended by the image." And I stand by that 100%. So, to answer your question, yes, I recognize that it was offensive for some, and it wasn't offensive for others.
-
- But, don't you see the political undertones associated with that whole fiasco? I'm not accusing you of being a part of that at all, but when I hear that members of the LEAD slate as well as the people that brought up the image had a meeting in Wellman before the senate meeting, this just confirms my intuitions. Listen Albert, I respect you and I have always thought that you add a great deal to the senate. In hindsight, I shouldn't have walked out. I let my emotions get the best of me. But, what you need to understand is that I did everything I could to rectify the situation at the meeting, apologizing and talking to many people who brought up the issue during breaks, and I was dismissed as being insincere. That was a shot that hurt me a great deal (as I'm sure the issue that hurt you so much about the flyer) and I knew that I wouldn't accomplish anything by staying. I did all I could, but it wasn't good enough. I feel bad that this whole incident has really unnecessarily marred my reputation, and I'm not too happy about it. That's where the above comments are coming from.
-
- Just to be clear, I didn't walk out on the student body. It's not so simple. I walked out in protest to something I though was unjust. But, after thinking about, I recognized that the image could have offended people, and that's why I attached my name to the letter, even though a lot of people I spoke thought it was bogus. --["Users/EricFriedman"]
- ------
- 2007-12-08 17:40:35 nbsp Ok, there has been a heck of a lot of talk about ["Eric Friedman"] walking out due to some image was or was not offensive.
+
+ But, don't you see the political undertones associated with that whole fiasco?
+
+ Just to be clear, I didn't walk out on the student body. It's not so simple. I walked out in protest to something I though was unjust. But, after thinking about, I recognized that the image could have offended people, and that's why I attached my name to the letter, even though a lot of people I spoke thought it was bogus. --["Users/EricFriedman"]

Winter 2008 ASUCD Electionhttp://daviswiki.org/Winter_2008_ASUCD_Election2007-12-08 15:59:08BiggAlJonson
Differences for Winter 2008 ASUCD Election

 Deletions are marked with - .

 Additions are marked with +.

Line 145:

Line 145:

- I usually never comment on wiki, because I do not like to get involved in this internet, gossip, rumor paradox that is called daviswiki, however, after Ms. Xie posted that note about Friedman's comments about the GO-UNIT. --EF
+ * Who said that's what was going on?
+ * Wanting to help unsheltered people points to a lack of judgment? Andrew
+ * No Andrew. Claiming that LEAD feeds the world by providing them with three meals a day does. --EF
+
+ * Eric, I respect your courage in making non-PC statements.
+
+ * Rob, although it may not seem like it, I do show some empathy on occasion.
+ * What makes you thinking they were "celebrating" homelessness? They were promoting helping people to not be homeless and educating the campus about the issue of homelessness. - ["JamesSchwab"]
+ * Who said that's what was going on? Therefore her interests are LEAD, fighting hunger & homelessness, and lobbying for social justice. She's amazing. --["Users/AndrewBianchi"]
+
+ The operative word is helping. There are some people in LEAD who work to help alleviate hunger and homelessness, but that's not to say LEAD is solving the problem singlehandedly or that this is the only issue LEAD cares about. -JZwald
+
+ * The key point here is that it's a list of three interests in separate sentences.
+
+ * The key point Bianchi is that I used my analytical skills to put two and two together.
+ * Eric, yourr asserting that every LEAD candidate, ever, has only cared about and worked on the issue of homelessness? -["JamesSchwab"]
+ * I think your experiencing some projection issues Eric.
+ * Actually ["Andrew Bianchi" Andrew], I think that sense of different communities is one very big weak point of ["LEAD"], and many other similarly thinking people.
+ * This is just out of pure interest, but what do you make of the existence of the CCC, the LGBTRC, the WRRC, and the various departments focused on racial or ethnic studies?
+
+ * Hmm, I only served the Jewish community?? What are you referring to? My efforts to run good people for senate?? Good luck Bianchi. Take it from someone who can win. --["Users/EricFriedman"]
+ ------
+ {["Davepoole" Dave] was tired, and bored, so he decided to add commentary to this debate as it really is pretty pointless anyway}
+ 2007-12-06 21:53:40 nbsp As you progress in your student government career Jack, you will eventually find out that it is the only thing they care about. --["Users/EricFriedman"] {Who are you addressing this to? and honestly you can make such a better point to say that they care more about the government than the students, that may be biting rather than meaningless}
+ * Better that than Senators like you. The only thing you care about is power and control. --["Users/BrentLaabs"] {What about his life? I think he cares about that too, feel the inner troll{
+ * Another attempt to smear my name and to detract from my laundry list of accomplishments and all the good I did as an ASUCD Senator. May the force be with you Mr. Laabs. Beware the dark side. --["Users/EricFriedman"] {Holier than thou, seriously, is it really a metric contest of how much good you did Mister Friedman}
+ * Eric, from my experience at Davis, you sufficiently smear your own name. Brent adds icing to the cake if anything. I sincerely hope Winter's GO candidates distance themselves from your petty ways. There are some good people in that organization, you, unfortunately overshadow them. Do everyone a favor a pipe down for a while. --["Users/MattBlair"] {Biting, but if they choose to associate with him, they would be fools not worth the offices anyway then right?}
+ * Hey Matt. Since you are a freshmen and your "experience" at UC Davis amounts to only one quarter, and you have been taken in by the LEAD propaganda machine, I'll go easy on you. But, honestly, you have nothing substantive to add to this, unless of course you can give me a specific instance when "I smear my own name." Are you referring to my beliefs and principles that are"unpopular" with most of the ["LEAD"] kids? Or are you just pretending that you know what your talking about, like your mentor? --["Users/EricFriedman"] {Ooh vicious words, now, he has had experience regardless of how expansive it is, so don't go denying that, he can also have the experience of hearing things from the past too, Eric. Now, if LEAD is the majority, and your beliefs differ from theirs, you are bound then to differing from the majority, really this point is unrelated to his comment but you can point out that because your opinion is dissenting that it isn't necessarily wrong, however to the point he was making is that you make these other people look bad, a perfect moment here you can say that this new generation, as successors in the slate are shining examples of the Go ideals, whatever those are, and really that would be a great move to end this entire thing, but you really cannot seem to get out of a flaming bag of shit}
+ * Oh ya, the propaganda sure got me. But I digress and am curious as who my mentor is. I'd love to know if they're my secrety santa too. --["Users/MattBlair"]
+ {Spelling errors aside, I firstly don't believe there is really such a propaganda, but truth aside, would you ever know? perhaps you are really that biased despite your best efforts not to be. Good examples though, however you are assuming his reasons for leaving senate that time, it would be better to quote or paraphrase the statements made in his leaving that reveal his motive, oh that would be biting, it may also be good to relate him to SteveO, also what are you thinking, being a campus leader hardly entails responsibility.
+ *I was present for the entirety of that senate meeting, him and GO as a whole took quite the tongue-lashing. I'm quite familiar with the context of his leaving. I believe he couldn't take the criticism, Eric believes he was targeted in an unjust matter, I doubt we'll ever agree on that. As for relating to SteveO I've heard of the person and that's all, so I can't make the comparison. -MB }
+ * Matt Blair....(huuuuuuh)...I. am. your. father. --["Daddy Darth"] {Cute.. so are we bringing more Steve into the debate?}
+
+ * I walked out of that Senate meeting to protest the unwarranted and discriminatory political attack.
+ {ooh, you made a mistake, and then another one, and yet another, but it doesn't matter because it was all pointless anyway, because it wasn't related to the initial purpose. Anyway, this entire point made was irrelevant because of this sweeping generalization I will make without investigation into the cause, therefore the point was entirely irrelevant and only supposed so by the other guys when representing their constituents, now I am not doing anything important for some time, so feel free to continue discussing all these irrelevant matters about a pointless issue.}
+ If I was being discussed, I would certainly want to be present. --["Users/NickSchmalenberger"] {Really, sometimes it may be akward.. like when the girls are talking about you with each other, eh, that would really be weird maybe, at least for them.. }
+ ------
+ 2007-12-06 23:07:05 nbsp LEAD fought for hungry commissioners during budget hearings.
