Woodstocks_Large.jpgLarge Pepperoni Woodstock's Pizza has to be the most popular pizza joint in Davis. Besides decent pizza, their menu offers salads, chicken wings, and frosted "CinnaBread." For us health nuts they also offer a whole-wheat crust at no additional cost. Sadly, it's not uncommon for the folded over portion of the crust to take about as much surface area as the cheese.

Woodstocks_What_Up.JPGEvent Poster Fall 2006

Woodstock's is generally loud and full of life. Open late, they offer free wireless as well as free refills. Combined with the fact they also serve beer, this makes Woodstock's and Original Steve's are the only places in Davis where you can surf the web, drink a beer, and eat pizza. Unfortunately, after 9PM they used to raise the prices for a slice of pizza to $2.90 (from $2.25 during the day) to squeeze money out of drunk people. To boot, late at night the quality of service goes way down: food takes FOREVER to get to you and the bar tenders are often very brusque.

Mon-Fri 12:00-2:00PM they have an All-You-Can-Eat pizza buffet for $6.99

3:00-6:00PM: Happy Hour, $1.00 off all beer and appetizers
10 PM-Close: Happy Hour, $1.00 off all beer
Delivery costs $2.00 plus tip ($4-$7 is considered a good tip). They'll even deliver to campus. The driver will call you up when they get there so you don't have to wait outside. If you want to pay for delivery using a credit card, they now ask for your credit card number and expiration date over the telephone. The safety of this measure may seem sketchy, but it's likely safer than their previous at-the-door, carbon-copying method.

On a side note, Woodstock's Pizza also has six other locations in California: San Diego, Santa Barbara, Irvine, Santa Cruz, San Luis Obispo, and chicoChico. An interesting fact, in Santa Barbara they change the name of their beloved pizza from "Causeway Classic" to "IV Classic" (IV stands for Isla Vista, the collegiate equivalent of a cesspool located adjacent to the UCSB campus). Actually, each of the locations of Woodstock's Pizza has it's own name for the "classic" pizza- San Diego "Aztec Classic", Santa Cruz "Cruz Classic", San Luis Obispo "SLO Classic", etc.

An interesting fact is that printed on the bottom of the large pizza boxes are biblical quotes, similar to In-N-Out. woodstock-psalm24.jpgPsalm 24, 1-2, for your convenience on the bottom of the box." There is a news story "atheist are boycotting the store until this is removed

Events

Woodstock's holds several different events at their bar on a weekly basis. They include:

Karaoke Woody: On Wednesdays nights, Karaoke is hosted by the staff from 9pm-Midnight.

Trivia Night: On Thursday nights, Trivia Nights are hosted by Smart Alex Trivia. Admission is free, and event starts at 9pm but usually fills up by 8:30, so get there early! Event lasts until 11:00 or 11:30 at the latest, and prizes are given out to winners of each round, as well as the overall winner.

GLOW: On Saturday nights, a blacklight dance party is held on the bar side of the restaurant. DJ's play a variety of Dubstep/midtempo/glitch/breaks/bass music from 10:30pm-1:30am.

Music: Periodically, but not on a regular schedule, local bands perform at the Woodstock's bar. The shows are almost always free.

Woodstock's events are almost always free, and are always ALL AGES! Since Woodstock's uses wristbands rather than carding at the door, the under-21 crowd is always welcome here. Obviously, you have to be 21 to buy beer, but you will never be turned away from an event at the bar just because you're not 21. That being said, they are very strict about underage drinking and will not hesitate to remove you and your entire group immediately if you are caught providing to a minor. Liquor licenses are hard to come by in Davis, and Woodstock's doesn't mess around with theirs!

History

Woodstock's was not always the size it is now. When the The Velvet Elvis, a bar opened by the owners of Ground Zero was closed for selling to minors, Woodstock's bought the property and remodeled. In the older right-hand side, the main eating area used to be raised about a foot above the regular floor.

Before it was the velvet elvis it was the library
Before the Library existed, the northern end was occupied by The Club. The southern end held Honorable Gee's, a Chinese restaurant.
Before Honorable Gee's existed, the southern end held "The Spudnut Coffee Shop."

P.I.E.

P.I.E. is their email coupon service (as in "pizza pie", a term more common on the East coast). You give them your email address and they send you coupons. Sadly, however, they never stop sending them to you, year after year, even if you move away. They seem to occasionally honor their opt-out, but then resume sending emails again months later. It's not much of an issue if you are a student with a ucdavis.edu email address that will go away when you leave Davis, but it can be very annoying otherwise, so you might want to use an email address you can close down later. When you sign up, you get a BOGO coupon.

DIY

Woodstock's will sell you dough balls if you want to make your own pizza. It's ~$2.50 for a large.

2008-03-25 23:05:50   Some of the worst pizza I have ever had. There was no crust under the pizza and there was too much crust on the outside. The pizza also did not taste good. I was really disappointed after hearing such good things about this place. I prefer Steve's any day of the week. —BrandonBarrette

2008-04-09 10:12:11   The only time I eat this pizza, like most people, is when there's nothing else to eat on a drunken night. The sauce accumulates around the crust, and it tastes BAD. The ingredients can't cover up the nasty sauce taste. Any other pizza is better from what I can tell. —Kiran

2008-04-19 22:00:44   I'm not sure I will ever go here again — I definitely won't order a take-out pizza on a Sat night again. Long wait, huge crowd of rude undergrads (somebody pushed me and stepped on my foot as I was waiting to go in), pizza expensive and didn't taste good. Usually I go to Steve's, which is much tastier with a more grown-up clientele. —AmandaSmith

2008-04-21 02:31:19   At first, when I ordered here, I didnt know what I was doing and thought I hated this place. But after a while this has become some of the best pizzas i ever tasted.

I am not sure, but I never had the option of choosing whether I wanted wheat dough or white flower. But im glad they have the option. and i LOVE how the sauce accumulates under the crust. It makes the crust that much more flavorable. The chocolate pies are amazing, but there is so much chocolate, it could know down an elephant. I highly do not recommend orderign anything smaller than a large pizza, otherwise its not worth it as much. They do give student's discount which is nice and support local communities at times. —chand3123k

2008-04-21 02:33:41   Hmmm, I also have a question. Are there different chefs for this restaurant? I do feel like there are slight differences between each pizza everytime we order. —chand3123k

2008-04-27 23:52:05   pizza is pretty good~ but, the cheese ALWAYS fall off for some reason. The pizza sauce is pretty good too.. a bit salty, then tangy, then spicy.

the lunch buffet is worth the price... you can get like 1-3 slices per plate cause they don't want you to waste extra slices. The customer service is pretty good, the food is good... —xcutioners

2008-05-05 00:59:27   On the side note, my friend ordered a pizza like 11:30pm Sunday night and we were hungry. Called up woodstocks, ordered a large cheese pizza, and got everything ready.

Guess what? We waited for almost an hour until I mentioned to my friend about the pizza. He called woodstocks and asked for a pizza-delivery trace; the person said that the pizza was never made..

wtf —xcutioners

2008-05-13 23:52:42   My husband and I go here about every Thursday. They have an awesome and entertaining beer selection— something new every time we go there. And we LOVE the PIZZA. I always ask for extra cheese cause it totally makes it better. The crust is REAL crust, and sometimes I just start cutting that off and eating it without the pizza. The salads are okay, though not as good as Steve's Place salad bar. The apple cinnimon pizza is just okay, but rather just tastes like canned apples in cinnamon on a mound of dough and lots of sugar. But seriously, I think Woodstocks has the best pizza in town. —JamieParker

2008-06-23 15:34:32   the dessert pies would be better without so much dough.

2008-06-27 15:03:29   Pizza is great... Employees are horrible. They once kicked us out because they thought we were giving beer to minors... no! Also, they used physical force to kick out my friend because they thought he punched a pregnant African American lady... no he didn't! Also, I swear that one guy was about to get a magnifying glass or a microscope to check my I.D. because he was staring at it for so long... get real guys. —aberrier

2008-06-27 23:34:10   I wasn't really digggin' their pizza at all. Too much cheese. Super uber de duper greasy pepperoni. Sauce is good though. Their crust is meh. I don't think I'll be coming back. —MissAmyQ

2008-07-05 19:41:09   Way overrated. It comes off as the premier pizza place in Davis. In reality it's a little bit above the median. Definitely better than Cenario's, and Domino's but doesn't compare to Symposium, Village Bakery or Papa Murphy's. I realy don't get what the big deal is with this place. Are they selling crack in the bathrooms? —JimBob

2008-08-25 22:08:14   Had some Woodstock's Pizza today. It was the most overrated, overhyped, and overpriced pizza I've ever had. I was thoroughly unsatisfied with it. And their lunch buffet selection? Cheese, Mushroom, Pepperoni, and Pizza-of-the-Day. Pathetic. And they couldn't even get the simple cheese pizza correct. The first bite tasted like Chuck-E-Cheese pizza, but got worse and worse...I didn't know that was possible. And, man, you should've seen those pepperonis curled up to form a bowl full of grease. They don't even replace the pizza until every slice of every selection of pizza is gone. Then you have to wait 10 minutes for it to be restocked. Cuts into the mere 2 hours the buffet is served, assuming you have the time to stay for two entire hours. I find it unimaginable that people would put down $2.50 for just one slice of their pizza. I'd rather spend $2.30 on a slice of MU pizza. Cheaper, a million times tastier, and they sure as heck don't hold back on the toppings.
I also had to swat away a couple flies.
Never paying for Woodstock's Pizza willingly ever again.

On the other hand, watching that one guy toss the pizza dough in the air was pretty cool. —TheShah

2008-10-28 16:03:26   The pizza here is sub par and way overpriced even with the student discount. I only order when there's a good coupon. The delivery takes way too long though I've noticed that delivery time correlates with how much you tipped the previous delivery person. They seem to deliver within a half hour or so if I gave them a generous tip on my last order. Has anyone else noticed this? Either way the pizza's not bad but not so good. I absolutely love their spicy breaded wings however so they keep me coming back. —AnonymousStudent

2009-01-18 23:00:47   Sure, not the best pizza in town. But it's open late, has good beer, and when I'm drinking nothing makes me happier than the hot wings. Mmmm. —ChristyMarsden

2009-02-09 17:27:43   So after ordering about $20 bucks in food, two smoking bouncers kicked my friend (and by proxy myself)for lack of shoes, loudly claiming it was a "health code violation". One of the bouncers, smoking at the door of the restaurant (the one with the "no smoking sign"), harassed me and my friend for his lifestyle. Anyone know where I can file this complaint properly? The guys are jackasses, and I want my money back. —DavidPoole

2009-02-14 13:44:21   RUDE, RUDE, RUDE EMPLOYEES. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE. EVER.

By far the worst customer service I've ever had from any place. Rule #1: CUSTOMERS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT. Listen to their wants and needs; don't talk back to them in an annoyed way. The employees here don't know anything about these manners. Today, we asked for a pizza that's half one topping, and the other with another topping, and what we got was a mauled pizza that was 75% one topping. Wow, it's as though my little nephew made it during pizza training school or some crap. To make it worse, when we mentioned this to the delivery girl, she first asserted that "It's a free pizza" (we got it for free because of another Woodstock's mishap in the past), trying to justify why it was so horrendously made. And then she further added, "I didn't make it. What do you want me to do about it?" with an annoyed attitude. We told her we just wanted to let her know about the pizza, so that next time this won't happen again. THERE WON'T BE A NEXT TIME. Finally, she left and groaned loudly. That's just one experience I've had with Woodstock's, among the very many.

Woodstock's, listen carefully: keep treating your customers like this, and you will lose your business. Everyone here, including the manager himself is a jerk. We wanted a pizza last night, called 2 minutes after closing and someone was like we can't make you a pizza, and hung up on me before I could even say anything. Yeah, the usual. I can't believe people eat here.

My housemates and I will never eat here again. When I hold meetings for my organization, I will never order Woodstock's pizza again for my members.

I feel sorry for the employees there. They all probably lead sad, pathetic lives and get pleasure from making other people angry and irritated because that's probably the highlight of their day.

I will make sure that I call their business center and file a complaint. —scorpio67

2009-03-15 20:07:17   Not good marketers: Students get 15% off, and the alumni get 15% off, and the skiers get 15% off; and I, a working person, am supposed to subsidize that?...in your dreams. Off to Papa Murphy's and fix it up with our garden stuff. How do I get a Ninja card? —wintersdude

2009-03-16 22:00:50   I personally find their pizza to be dull and not worth the price. I'd choose Steve's, Lamp post, or Papa Murphy's over Woodstock's any day. —BrookeB

2009-03-19 21:10:04   Just a wee bit more expensive than the other pizza places, but Woodstock's is alright in my books. You have the option of wheat or regular dough, and... I didn't get any rude service. :o) —strawberry

2009-04-02 20:15:42   Has anyone gone to their trivia night? Do you have to show up early? —BretCorzine

2009-05-17 21:17:26   Best Pizza in Davis~~ —coffeetea99

2009-07-13 22:12:15   I'm a fan of the pizza here, I like the wood booths, and the wait staff has always been very friendly and accommodating. —patrick82

2009-08-11 14:37:38   Bad, bad pizza. And I am not even being uppity. Really bad crust- doughy on the sides, saggy bottom. Flavorless, all around bad sauce. Its just not good and I can't believe this place wins best pizza in Davis. It makes me sad for Davis. —Thavy

2009-08-16 01:03:15   Woodstocks occupies the same place as the long lost biker club/bar that was called "The Club". Back in the day, you would see many Harleys parked out in front. Now, it is a pizza parlor. I haven't had Woodstock's Pizza in quite a while, but I do remember the pizza was good for the price. If you want to dine in, then last I checked, they have a great salad bar, and good prices on draught beer.
They used to have a coupon special you could keep running with every pizza you got for delivery. $9.99 for an extra large one topping pizza with a coupon that always came pasted on the box. This was a Saturday night guarantee for me back in 1999/2000. They don't do that any longer, and last time I ordered, still not too pricey. Good pizza overall and a good deal. —Darren22

2009-09-03 18:45:01   its funny that the article is just a bad review Woodstock's is awesome BTW —P.LaurenceCapito

2009-10-03 18:47:49   There is a lot of negativity on here. Here is positive story. The place I work for held an event, our first one, and Woodstock's came and sold slices and smiled. It wasn't as lively as we thought it might be. Matt was awesome and made the whole experience great. —KTcooper

2009-10-22 01:30:50   Loved their causeway classic with wheat crust and white sauce!!! <3 —allwalksoflife87

2009-11-08 21:02:50   their pizza is good sometimes. the pepperoni has way too much grease though! We do enjoy the beers though, and usually they have some good deal going on where you dont have to spend too much. one thing that I love is their chicken caesar salad...the dressing is so rich and creamy and amazing! it definitely goes good with a pizza and a beer. yummm : ) even though I have my doubts about the pizza, the Mr really likes it. all the time. —mrandmrs

2009-11-24 00:07:19   To satisfy my midnight craving for pizza (hadn't had a pie in about three months), I called at 11:44 PM on Monday, Nov. 23, 2009 and spoke with Kaitlyn, who took my delivery order for a thin-crust, extra-large Causeway Classic combo (Italian Sausage, Pepperoni, Salami, Black Olives, 'Shrooms, Extra Cheese) on wheat bread.

Pre-tax total was $22.99. When I tried to use my $3.00-off coupon (#87), Kaitlyn was gracious enough to offer me greater savings: approximately $4.00 off my total (something along the lines of $1.00 off each topping on an extra-large pizza after 10:00 PM). So my total (including tax & delivery) came out to be about $22.00 & change. Because they delivered within 25 minutes, I gave the driver $26.00 even. My piping hot pie soon filled my living room with wafting aromas of fragrant mushrooms, hearty meats and the spice of tomato sauce.

Great phone and delivery service, and the pizza paired well my remaining half-bottle of 2007 Old Vine Zinfandel (Sobon Estate, Amador County, Plymouth, CA). What more could anyone ask for at 11:40 at night?

Thank you, Woodstock's.
T.Zukumori

2010-01-21 20:12:07   If you live or visit Davis it's definately worth going here once. That said, I don't know if I'd ever be willing to go here often or as my regular pizza place. The pizza is a bit on the pricy side and is also not really any better than chain pizza, sadly. While I love local business, my taste buds say stick with Mountain Mikes over Woodstocks for pure taste.

That said, Woodstocks is a fun place to go with friends to hand out and drink and the same cannot be said of any chain pizza joint. Is it a better bar that serves pizza than it is a pizza place? Maybe. —rfrazier

2010-03-14 22:47:38   Their "insert town here" special is the same for every college town.

Hey everyone - look at that phony! —upisdown

2010-03-14 23:02:24   I heard that Woodstock's had some of the best pizza in Davis, so when I finally tried some I was disappointed. The crust is about the flavor and texture of cardboard and the sauce isn't very good.

I also wanted to point out to the commenter that referred to Woodstock's as a "local business" that Woodstock's is actually a small chain based out of San Diego. (See [WWW]http://woodstocksca.com/about-us/contact-us.html for all their chain locations.) I guess they're better than Dominos, but I wouldn't say much better.

My advice is try Lamppost Pizza instead. (I still haven't tried Steve's or Village Bakery.) —gynomight

2010-03-25 14:49:43   I'm surprised to read so many negative comments here. First, I must admit that I am an employee of the restaurant, so I am obviously a little bit biased. As far as the quality/taste of the pizza is concerned, everyone will have their own personal tastes and I can't blame anyone for not liking the food. I personally think it is great pizza, but that doesn't mean everyone will love it. What I am surprised about is the comments about the staff and service. Woodstock's employees work very hard to please their customers, and will not hesitate to correct mistakes of any kind. We truly believe that "the customer is always right," and if you have a problem, we will listen and correct it. Obviously, we are human, and not everything will be perfect all the time. But with that in mind, and with a good attitude and reasonable approach toward reality, you will find that our service can't be beat. Yes, if you come in on Friday night and the line is out the door, your food will probably take a long time to get to you. Yes, if you live in the dorms and give the wrong phone number when you order, or you don't get reception in your building, your order will definitely not make it to you until you call us back; how else are we supposed to get ahold of you? The point isn't that we're perfect. It's that, when we are imperfect, and you take the time to respectfully tell us that, we WILL do absolutely everything within reason to fix that problem and turn you into a happy customer. The last thing anyone at Woodstock's wants is for you to have a bad experience, so if you have an issue, like the many people who have commented here, please give us a chance to fix it before totally blasting us over it. You will most likely find that everything can turn out just fine with good communication, a good attitude, and reasonable expectations. Thanks to all who patronize our store, and to those who no longer do, I encourage you to give us another shot! —AlexHall

2010-03-25 17:01:47   This place and Village are the only two local pizza joints in town that I will order from. The food is always fresh and the quality top notch. The first time that I ever went in I was treated very rudely but after running into the owner I gave them a second shot and am happy that I did. Hands down one of the top 3 pizzas in town. —JoeRandom

2010-04-13 12:26:00 Woodstock's Pizza is the best place to order pizza! My family loves the pizza so much. We especially like how the pizza crust is filled with sauce. I recommend this place to anyone who loves great pizza and wonderful service. -Giovanni Janzen

2010-05-13 14:03:01   I have a question about the picture with the Psalm: Where is this news story about atheists boycotting Woodstock's? I'd never heard that. —Shiva

2010-06-02 12:37:41   Woodstock's Pizza isn't that bad—it's not the greatest as some will attest, but it's on my top choice of whom to order from when in Davis. A bit pricey, considering you can get some pretty cheap pizzas elsewhere. My hugest gripe with Woodstock's is their karaoke. I've been here a few times and have come early in order to get in a song or two, but the karaoke DJ is pretty horrible. I went on a pretty slow summer night, where there were only a few singers in front of me, which prompted me to think that I could get my chance in under an hour. That didn't happen, unfortunately. The DJs friends who sat at the table with her (I remember two girls distinctively) went an alarming four times went on before I had a chance to sing my one. Blatant favoritism? Definitely. I went again later that summer and had the same experience. —BreeButler

2010-06-10 11:19:15   LOVE THE STAFF! awesome pizza. good beer. great atmosphere. —MissAmyLu

2010-06-13 00:53:40   me and my friend used to order late at night to grub here. but seriously, the crust gives my jaw a workout. it's also very pricey...i would rather get the $5 at Ceaser's. the atmosphere looks quite relaxing though: a nice tv up front, music, and puff the magic dragon(the mascot) watching over us. —binladen

2010-07-02 16:27:15   Hey there, I just wanted to stop by to say that I've been to Woodstocks a couple of times lately, and I found the service to be courteous and attentive and professional. I was very impressed. —drpottsiv

2010-07-02 17:01:44   I would say this is the best tasting pizza in davis —smartgirl

2010-07-16 17:36:56   I think this is the worst pizza in Davis. —JasperD

2010-09-18 11:09:00   Good pizza, very good beer selection and GREAT customer service, even on super-crowded Friday nights. —JulieCross

2011-02-06 17:52:54   I only go here for the slice pizzas, staff is really nice —NikhilDahal

2011-03-24 13:35:17   I haven't gone here since my friend was assaulted by one of the employees last year. Because there's a bar, I'll explain that there was no drink involved (for moral reasons, he won't touch the stuff). He had put down his stuff and gone to order pizza (so was standing near the door), one of the employees asked him to leave due to his clothing, he was annoyed, but he went to get his stuff. The employee suddenly shoved him INTO the door and out and slammed the door in his face. I was almost hit too by my friend as he was being shoved towards me. I was shocked by the sudden violence and almost called the police (I would have if it had escalated). Admittedly, I don't know if the employee was a bouncer or at what level they're allowed to physically assault patrons into leaving, but it seemed like since he was quietly going to get his stuff and leave, it went way too far. If this was illegal (and again, I don't know if it is or not), Woodstocks really needs to look into it. —Ravyn

2011-03-28 19:16:47   People need to not steal/lose the boardgame pieces. Otherwise it's a fave. —A*Lo

2011-04-07 17:29:53   I love this place. Woodstock has some of the best employees in Davis. They are always very nice and all of the laugh at my lame jokes. I know they're lame, they know that they're lame, but they laugh anyway. Thats how nice they are. Top notch. —Dozer

2011-04-10 00:04:50   Woodstock pizza satiates my late-night cravings again: At 11:09 PM, Jonathan took my phone order for delivery of a 16" X-large Davis Classic with thin crust on white bread (pepperoni, sausage, black olives, mushrooms, onions and extra cheese) — normally a $22.99 pie, but I had an e-mail coupon for $5.00 off. Adding in an order of 12-piece buffalo wings for $7.99, after tax and delivery, my total was $30.69. Jonathan said that it was busy night, so he thought it'd take about 45 minutes to 1 hour before my delivery, which was no problem for me (I wasn't going anywhere tonight).

I hung up the phone at 11:15 PM but at 11:51 PM, the driver called and was outside my door. Impressed with the prompt service (36 minute turn around before midnight), I gave the driver a $5.00 tip.

Now -that's- how a vendor successfully manages customer expectation. —T.Zukumori

Thanks T. Zukumori!

2011-04-10 16:16:52   I'm surprised so many people think this is the best pizza in Davis. The crust tastes like cardboard IMO.

My favorite part of Woodstock's is the trivia night. I love when the category involves music, such as playing a theme song and you have to name the TV show. My main problem with trivia is they need to ask the questions at a faster pace. I start out not minding, but halfway through it really gets to be a drag. It seems like forever in between each question and even if they cut off one minute of answering time for each question we could actually be out before midnight. Some of us have places (work/school) to be the next morning... —MeggoWaffle

2011-05-02 18:51:16   I don't suggest using the pin ball machines. —Graveflower

2011-06-15 21:19:37   Got a pizza delivered to my place this afternoon, and the guy who took the order was very friendly. I had eaten here before, but forgot the name of the pizza I wanted. I named off the two ingredients (jalepeno and chicken) and he automatically told me the name of the pizza (it was called the Firebird). I ended up ordering an extra large Firebird pizza and he told me it would take 30-35 minutes.

I had a student discount coupon that I forgot to mention on the phone and I called Woodstocks back, and someone else answered and informed me that the pizza was already on the way. But to tell the driver that when he arrived to my place, for him to call back to verify  the price change. By the time the pizza came, I told the driver (who ended up being the guy who took my phone order) about the changes, and he was very courteous and told me it was no problem about the late-coupon, and that Woodstocks had already called him.

I applaud to Woodstocks for being very professional today, and to the driver for being really courteous.

Even when I go to Woodstocks in the evenings, the staff is always friendly.
