2008-11-25 13:57:31 The one in Sacramento surely didn't. Crazy Chico. —EdWins
2008-12-17 22:26:27 They opened Monday. I have not tried it yet. —EricaMacGregor
2008-12-23 14:49:43 I had the Beach Bikini (turkey, cranberry sauce, cream cheese, alfalfa sprouts, sunflower seeds), and it was rather delicious! The sunflower seeds and alfalfa sprouts added a nice texture to the sandwich. I felt kind of weird asking for a "Beach Bikini," though.
The beach theme extends to pretty much everything in this place from the ocean-colored floors to the food being served on frisbees. We sat at a booth table shaped like a surfboard - it was a little too narrow, making it hard for me to avoid knocking my legs into those of my friends on the other side. There was also a couple of large flatscreen tvs in the back. —Ami
2009-01-09 03:28:27 I tried it today, ordered the Santa Cruz (large) and it was gigantic. I had a messy time eating it because of everything IN the sandwich, but I must say it was good. I will come back some time to try the other sandwiches, but maybe not for a while because that sandwich isn't going anywhere for days. Haha. —quadshock
2009-01-09 03:29:37 Oh and I also want to say that E street is probably the most interesting in downtown Davis these days. Places like this and Crepe House are paying more attention to design and themes. It makes the whole experience richer. —quadshock
2009-01-21 22:37:15 Since I first tried this place two weeks ago, I've been back five times. The portions are enormous (except for the one time when I told a friend just how huge the sandwiches are—he got a teensy portion!), so the prices are reasonable. Expect to pay at least $6 (usually 7) for a small sandwich, but for that small to be big enough for two people to share. Other important info: sandwich prices don't include any sides, they have Diet Dr. Pepper; after 4pm their domestic draft pints are $2 MTWFSa and $1 Thurs/Sun, and anything with the spicy BBQ sauce is amazing. —SonnyStack
2009-01-31 19:47:36 My boyfriend and I have been wanting to try this place for a while and we finally tried it last week. He had the Pig Kahuna and I tried the Northshore. The Pig Kahuna was a little bit too spicy for our taste. The guy who took our order said it wasn't that bad but it was spicier than we expected. The Northshore was great though! The sandwiches are huge and definitely filling. We had an overall good experience but will be weary of the spicy sandwiches for the future. Good place to eat though and the atmosphere looks like fun! One of the manager's said they would be start having beer pong soon. —cia0bella10
2009-02-10 00:49:43 This place if freakin' great. The pulled pork sandwich (pig kahuna)is the best I've ever had. Screw Jared, eat right. Eat at Beach Hut Deli. —Fuellenbach
2009-03-01 18:24:49 This is an awesome sandwich place. They serve hot and cold sandwiches, with great selections of cheese, meat and breads. I like their combination of provolone cheese and cream cheese, which perfectly complements any kind of meat. Pastrami is also one of my favorites there. Their veggies and breads were very fresh. Every time I went there I was in a big group. Just watching everyone's order, I wanted to try them all! So far, I tried surfin' birds, beach combers (choice of 2 meats and 2 cheeses), and shark bites. They were all very tasty and generous in portions. The staffs were all friendly and sunny as well. Definitely my first choice for deli in Davis. —kellyM123
2009-03-12 22:57:42 I have been to one in Sac, great to have one in Davis. The food is good, but expensive when you add the sides. I can not afford to eat here but maybe once a week. For the price I like 3rd & U Cafe better. —davisdan
2009-03-15 14:08:28 I'm from the east coast where Italian delis and sandwiches reign supreme. That being said, this is a darn good place. While not crusty Italian bread, the bread here is fresh and light (even the wheat bread). My girlfriend got the "Wind Surfer" which was loaded with meat, just the perfect amount of cheese, tons of lettuce, pickles, tomatoes and peppers. I got the "Beach BBQ" with roast beef on wheat. What I got was a nicely toasted open faced bun tons of their BBQ shredded roast beef, topped with some melted pepperjack, red onions and peppers. It was excellent! I ordered a small which was plenty of food, I couldn't even finish it because I ate about 1/3 of the "Wind Surfer" sandwich too. Well worth the price for the amount and quality of the food, highly recommended! —NickStrand
2009-03-16 22:08:11 DELICIOUS Sandwiches. Cool decor. Oh and when you order avacado on your sandwich, they sure give you a nice portion compared to other sandwich shops.
I wish it were a bit cheaper, but I guess the quality of the food is why its so pricey. Oh, and FYI, their Philly Cheese steak has cream cheese on it as well, which can be an acquired taste.
PASTRAMI HERE IS KING! —BrookeB
2009-03-18 15:10:01 came here last week and was super exited to get the pulled pork sandwich bc of all the reviews. i thought the flavor was nice, but too much meat for my liking. i pulled out more than half of the meat filling and took it home to make 2 more sandwiches. my friend had the woody, which was a lot tastier. the prices are good for the amount you get and the atmosphere is cool —skinnyfatgirl
2009-04-22 23:38:50 Some of the sandwiches are messy, but really hearty! The Woody is my personal favorite. —TylerSe
2009-04-23 12:48:57 The sandwhiches are great and so far the service has been friendly and fast. I wish they would introduce a whole-grain bread as an option. —LokiAbbi
2009-06-30 02:44:40 This is NOT a place that you will come away from hungry. Dear god, the portions.. Expect a lot for your money, and some serious flavor. May be a bit pricy for students on a budget, but given the size of the food involved, a savvy student could stretch a sandwich to last all day. I'm craving the Woody right now, and lamenting the fact they won't open for another eight hours.. —Flynn
2009-06-30 11:06:03 I really like this place here in Davis and the other locations I visited in Sacramento. With the loss of Togos downtown this is a very acceptable alternative. Huge portions and definitely can be stretched out to more than one meal. I just had the Hobie two days ago and I'm still thinking about how yummy it was. —loneshark
2009-07-14 20:31:50 Sandwiches are delicious! Fresh ingredients and awesome flavor. Be sure to try out their lemonades/juice drinks they keep in the fridge (I forgot the brand). —davisgirl10
2009-07-21 21:58:45 An employee suggested I try the Malibu, on account of it being a combination not normally put together. This made me take a closer look at their whole menu, and now I feel like they have too many good-sounding sandwiches and it must be a conspiracy to keep me coming back. It is a tasty conspiracy. —BrettHall
2009-07-24 10:36:30 Their daily specials are definitely worth the price for the taste. Satisfying while not breaking my wallet. —SunjeetBaadkar
2009-10-22 20:04:31 Dude the Pig Kahuna is the bomb!!! Get a medium though, cuz they're freakin huge. Seriously it's lunch and dinner in one. Best sandwich place in Davis. —PublicEnemyNumberOne
2009-11-10 22:01:38 I've been working my way through the menu, but the Malibu still reigns supreme. Pastrami, avocado, swiss, and italian dressing on toasted cheese bread. Truly unbelievable. Best sandwich in town. —EricWecker
2009-11-11 10:47:08 I highly agree with EricWecker. The MALIBU is the ultimate sandwich here, its juicy and meaty on toasted bread. The Santa Cruz isn't too bad either, but its quite an indulge...pastrami, cream cheese, avocado, AND bacon. Love it here, its really cute decor too..and your sandwiches get served on Frisbees :) —MissAmyQ
2009-11-11 10:59:18 Quite tasty, well priced, and open later than Zia's. Often a little too busy so make sure you're not in a rush to get anywhere after your meal. —GJC02
2009-12-29 16:13:56 Love the malibu sandwich, although the chunks of garlic in the bread are a little big for my liking. —BrookeB
2010-01-27 12:41:17 This place is awesome! Great food, excellent value, nice atmosphere and close to campus. What more could you ask for? —DavidHolcomb
2010-02-02 20:49:54 I ate there today and had a great sandwich. This place is so yummy, I can't wait to eat there again! —MustangLisa05
2010-02-02 21:01:51 I love this place, good prices and very generous portions. I like the Drakester, it is like a jalapeno popper in a sandwich. —DagonJones
2010-02-05 11:19:39 I went yesterday and had a California sandwich. The food was good (albeit very difficult to eat because they stuff so much in there), but the prices are just too high for me to make a return trip- $9 for a small sandwich and drink is too much for students on a budget. Other sandwich places like Subway and Togo's just have more bang for the buck. Too bad. —acparsons
2010-02-10 15:43:29 Surfin bird is awesome! They give you so much meat! I want one right now! Best sandwiches in Davis. Plus, last time i went there, if you buy a large sandwich, they give you a free t-shirt! —biochick
2010-02-23 01:37:41 Coral Reefer, folks, or whatever the deal is that they have on a sign outside of the store. (I think it's the coral reefer.) Includes a small Surfin' Bird, chips, and a drink for $4.99. Considering that a small Surfin' Bird goes for $6.40, you're getting an awesome deal with that meal. —AlexanderHo
- Is it made from actual Jimmy Buffett bandmates? -jw
2010-03-03 10:55:01 This is the best sandwich place I have ever been to. 2 thumbs up. —mhfcc
2010-03-17 23:26:06 A really good sandwich place definitely. You cant go there and expect it to be like subway, its higher quality and takes much longer to make, so theres usually a little bit of a wait. Enough atmosphere and decor to keep you entertained during that time though. They have all kinds of reaallllyy good sandwiches, a little on the pricey side but well worth it since you will be full all day long. I think they are trying to be more integrated in to the drinking scene being open until 1:00 a couple nights, and $1 pint nights and such. Had green beer for $1 on St. Pattys! —cj2012aggie
2010-04-15 19:07:06 Went back here last night, and had a medium SANTA CRUZ and it was huge. I had to take half of it home and I was more than full in one sitting. It was filled with layers of pastrami, bacon, cream cheese, avocado and all its fixings. It is a bit steep in price for almost $11, but its worth for the freshness and quality of the food. —MissAmyQ
2010-05-13 00:07:07 This place is pretty expensive. However, the sandwiches are freaking awesome. A small sandwich will run between 6-8 dollars but it'll stuff your stomach. I've only gotten the Surfin' Cow so far, which is delicious. Pretty sure it's not good for the heart though. Will try other sandwiches. —BenLee
2010-05-14 17:24:37 Best lunch deal in town! A hearty sandwich, chips and a beer or soda for $4.99. All the sandwiches I've tried have been great; my favorite's the Beach Bikini. I love this place! —halona
2010-06-09 18:55:11 What?! "Coral Reefer" meal is amazing! Small Surfin Bird + Chips + Beer or Soda for $4.99?!?! Love this place. —AmandaAbughosh
2010-06-30 11:37:21 I can't believe I waited this long to try this place. I tried the place that was at that location before and it was terrible. I LOVE the Beach Hut. It is AWESOME! I was tempted not to add my comment along with all the other great reviews. I don't want everyone to come, I will have to wait longer for my sandwich! Delicious!!
2010-07-03 00:04:10 Beach hut is a stand by for me. Although its a little pricey (their meal deal is extremely reasonable, however), it's a nice treat. I like the Santa Cruz with extra peppers. In fact, I like it so much I can't recall ever getting anything else. I enjoy it hot, but the leftovers cold are surprisingly good. The large is HUGE. I eat a lot and usually I can't even get through it. In particular, I like that it comes with a ton of meat and avocado. Some people like the subtlety of smaller portions; when I go to a deli I just want a big a** sammich that tastes good. Beach hut delivers. Affordable beer, friendly service, and two tv's that always have sports on—I'm a happy camper. (I have had samplings of other sandwiches that dates or friends got and none have disappointed. Some may have even been better than the santa cruz, I just can't bear to change.) For the style of sandwich, it can't be beat in Davis—and it would put up a fight anywhere else as well. —tjpeck
2010-08-09 08:22:39 Tried this place last weekend. I was bummed to find out the Coral Reefer meal deal is only served Monday-Thursday. Lunch ended up being $18 for two people which was a little steep compared to Togos or Subway. However to give credit where credit is due, the Surfin Bird sandwich was delicious. Just have to go back during the week to enjoy it more often. —103
2010-08-09 09:59:16 We met up with some friends downtown on Saturday afternoon. We had planned to grab a drink at Sophia's but discovered they didn't open until 5. We decided to swing by Beach Hut to see how the beers looked, and it turned out they had $2 pints of Lost Coast's Downtown Brown. Great deal, so we decided to stick around. They have a couple of other Lost Coast selections, including their Tangerine beer (extra carbonation, not too sweet for a fruit beer, very refreshing) and the Inversion IPA. I think the others were around $4/pint, which is still not bad. I'm not sure if they always have a $2 special or not, but it's a great deal and it was running all day.
And of course, the sandwiches are awesome. I haven't had one in a few months, but I hope to rectify that in the near future. —TomGarberson
2010-08-13 20:45:25 Their specials are probably their best deals. —SunjeetBaadkar
2010-08-21 19:13:40 Well, it looks like this place has mostly positive reviews, so hopefully it was just a bad day for me.
I've worked at a deli before, I know rushes happen, and I'm usually pretty ok with waiting a couple minutes for food. Doesn't really bother me. I have a half hour for lunch, which is usually enough to get a bite to eat at a deli, but I'm never too pissed or annoyed if it runs over a couple minutes for good food.
But when I ate there the other day for the first time, I was pretty disappointed for a variety of reasons.
The place felt tacky, but again, for good food, that doesn't bother me and I'll let it slide.
At about 15 minutes of waiting, I was pretty hungry, but hey, there were 5-6 people waiting on sandwiches when I came in.
At about 20 minutes, I was still pretty hungry, some people who came in after us were already eating their sandwiches, so I figured I'd check in at the counter and see how ours were coming along (as they hadn't actually told me anything or apologized for taking so long), and got "its not ready yet"
A few more people came in, and got sandwiches.
I asked again.
Finally our sandwiches came in at 28 minutes, and I got to try them out.
The ingredients tasted about on par with subway, it cost about 3x more, and I recommended everybody I know not go to the place.
Pretty disappointed. —William42
2010-10-01 12:53:19 I'm sorry but to those of you who think this place is expensive. C'Mon, the amount of meat that comes on one of their sandwiches is massive. To compare with Subway? Really? Subway gives you a tiny slice of meat and cheese. If you order double meat it still doesn't come close to this place and you end up paying about the same. —ashleyinthemist
2010-10-27 14:17:15 The Coral Reefer special offered M-Th, consisting of a Small Surfin' Bird (turkey, avocado, bacon, cream cheese), Chips, and a Beer (Miller) or Soda for $4.99 is NO LONGER AVAILABLE... I sadly discovered yesterday at lunch.
2010-11-08 12:06:19 Update: The Coral Reefer is back for $6.99. —Magster
