Sitting right in the middle of the Quad end of the Memorial Union, the flagpole stands... strong. The flagpole is usually the place of origin of remembrance walks, protests in the quad, and various flag ceremonies like raising and lowering the flag. In a way, the flagpole is the social center-of-gravity of the Memorial Union.
Note that on the North side of the flagpole, there is a card holder at eye level. If any flag (US, California, or University) is lowered to half-staff, there is a Memorium Card located in the card holder in remembrance of those who have died (national hero, state hero, or student/staff members).
The raising and lowering of the flags is a joint responsibility between the Information Desk, NROTC, and ROTC.
