Star Ginger is a Southeast Asian food truck on campus near the Silo. It is part of the expanding Star Ginger restaurant chain owned by Mai Pham, along with her other businesses Lemon Grass, Lemon Grass Grill, and La Bou. Star Ginger is a partnership with Sodexo, and will be expanding to many airports, campuses, and other catering outlets over the next few years (at least that's the plan).

Menu

They serve chicken, pork, and vegetarian rice bowls, as well as thai tacos, noodle salads, and a rotating selection of specials. To drink, they serve thai iced tea, as well as a selection of soft drinks and water kept at the bottom of the truck.

They served banh mi sandwiches until Winter Quarter 2015, when they switched to rice bowls.

Hours/Locations

Star Ginger is open for lunch Monday through Thursday outside of the Silo, and over by Hutchison Hall on Fridays.

For dinner, it is open from 4:45-7:00 Monday through Thursday. On Monday and Wednesday, it is located by the Tercero residence halls, just North of the DC, and on Tuesday and Thursday, it is located by the convenience store in Segundo.

The truck also works the football games, as well as special events like the BUZZ at the beginning of the school year.

2011-08-19 13:05:47   Update: they're doing a "test opening" today, handing out free banh mi sandwiches and rice bowls. Real opening is 8/22/11, I think? —ToddGreen

2011-08-26 15:42:31   A Vietnamese sandwich for six bucks is a little much, especially since you get a small one with very little meat. Quality was similar to that of Sunrise's on a mediocre day. Would only eat here if I am feeling really lazy. —hankim

2011-08-29 12:21:40   Thai tea was good, everything else was just way too expensive for the quality. My friend's chicken dish was even a little undercooked, and my chicken green curry was bland. They might have been rushing on opening day, but serving chewy pinkish chicken breast is a bit disconcerting. Try Sunrise for a more reasonable and tasty banh mi, and Thai Nakorn for far superior curry. —DavisFoodie

2011-08-30 12:59:59   Definitely be careful ordering their meat dishes. I second DavisFoodie's contention that their chicken breast is undercooked. My Thai BBQ chicken was also chewy and pinkish (threw it away after a few bites). Don't know how they can undercook the breast when it is super thin, but they manage to do so. —DGriffi

2011-09-01 12:12:35   Overpriced. —kkha91

2011-09-22 17:39:20   A thai/viet truck on campus!? How disappointed I am to see the prices and read about the quality. Looks like I'm still gonna have to make that schlep to Sunrise. Also surprised noodleless menu. —AndyChuck

2011-09-27 19:54:23   The chicken is actually a thigh not breast. Which can often account for the color in the thigh. —trixar

2012-09-05 14:50:12   Is this food truck still on campus? How has the food changed over its first year of operation? —JudithTruman

2013-02-21 09:07:27   Still on campus, next to the Silo. Looks like the menu has changed.—DavidBarnum

2013-04-29 01:58:39   I used to like this place for their sandwiches...but then one day I found a hair in my sandwich :( —RebelYell

  • Uh-oh. Was it one of yours? —("Users/BrianKenyon")

2015-01-30 14:58:46   They seem to have taken banh mi off their menu. Now the only foods they sell are rice bowls (curried, and it doesn't even mention that on their menu board. You only find out through your receipt), Thai chicken tacos, and Asian noodle salad. Shame they took the banh mi away, because even if they weren't the best I've had, it was the closest location for me to get it without having to go off campus to downtown. —MichelleNguyen
